College is an extremely fun time - you are on your own for the first time and you get to enjoy the one period of your life where you aren't a kid, but you're also not a full grown up. There will be fun events and parties to go to and lots of confusing temptations. Just remember, trust your gut. It is so important to listen to that little voice in your head that tells you what you should do. Here are some tips to help ensure the "little voice" in your head will keep you safe and help you #partysmart.
If you do go to parties, then just make sure that you are partying smart! The first thing to do before any night out is to arrange transportation BEFORE you go out. Find a designated driver (or offer to be the DD yourself and save on those empty calories). If you choose to drink when you go out, make sure to drink moderately and alternate your drinks with water. Also, grab a snack with friends or eat a meal before going out to avoid drinking on an empty stomach. Finally, always make sure to be aware of your surroundings and stay with friends, or have someone you can call if you need them.
There are always resources on campus for more information on safe drinking and after hour buses or safety services. For any questions about your specific campus, please let us know under the contact tab!
Also, there is nothing wrong with not drinking if you don't want to. There can sometimes be a stigma that makes it feel like you should be drinking to have fun, but that is definitely not the case. There are tons of activities for college students that do not involve drinking, such as movie nights, rock climbing, or game nights. If you enjoy drinking, by all means! But if you don't, just be you and do whatever makes you feel comfortable.
Finally, have fun! College should be enjoyable, just make sure to keep it safe!
